Whatcha doin’ for the rest of your life?

Hey folks. This day is proving to be a stellar one. Although, I haven’t run my yet — first to be outside, three miles, today. So talk to me after that.

Meanwhile, I now have a shirt to wear for the 5k this weekend, Mat Kearney’s new single is out, tonight (after my run, eek) I am watching Babies with Jen T., and we received a water cooler in my office. (It’s the small things, folks.)

Last night Rebecca came over. I lured her over with tofu and veggies, a la stir fry with Thai Red Curry sauce. (Which by the way, is all I ever feed Rebecca. She’s a vegetarian, and I just am not good at feeding her. I sometimes switch it up with a pasta dish, but I get sick of pasta, since as Italians we eat it so much, and I take opportunities to eat tofu very seriously. Anyways, if you have any veggie friends you cook for, send recipes my way!)

Anyways, so after I basically had Rebecca make us dinner and then ate it with her, I gave her a beer, and said, “We need to work on this craft project.” Which, as it turns out, took us until 11 pm. Luckily we had Jeff, Rebecca, and I, so I think the t-shirts are much better looking than they would have been had I did it on my own.

There was a hilarious moment right before we started ironing on letters where Jeff thought one side was down, whereas Rebecca interpreted the other side as being down. He tried to prove himself by taking a spare letter and affixing it to a white t-shirt he had lying around. He ended up affixing it to the shirt he was using as the shield (so the letter doesn’t melt) and now my Ben and Jerry’s shirt (Lauren remember when I got that shirt in Rhode Island, circa 1999ish?) has a nice “S” on the back. Rebecca and I laughed, laughed, and laughed, and it was Becca, 1, Jeff 0. Now, onto the iron-on letters.

We laid the letters out then ironed them on one at a time, while Jeff dealt with printing the design onto the iron-on paper.

Now I was carefully turning the shirt inside out, so we could iron from the other side.

The reveal. Did they stick? Will they stay??

Success.

Now we moved on to placement for the front and back iron-on papers.

*Time lapse.* My shirt is magically done, too!

Don’t let these pictures fool you. I did not do much of the work. I merely ironed. Rebecca helped with the placement of the letters and patches, Jeff printed the patches, and they both read the directions and just told me how to iron. Oh, how I love having creative people around me. And a big shout out to Jess, who designed the patch for me in the first place!

Jeff helping me figure out how to get the front patch on. We marked ’em, but I don’t have an eye for straight lines, as it turns out.

Here we come, 5k!

Through the cradle of the civil war…

Well friends, tomorrow is the day we head off for the other side of the country. I’m sorry I’ve been out — plague struck the HAP house, and I’ve been sick. And preparing for a move at work. And preparing for the road trip.

I’ll be posting travel updates on the cooking blog, so check out my progress there. Tomorrow’s goal is Flagstaff, AZ. I’ve never been to Arizona, and I am excited for the trip and all the states I’ll be able to add to my travel log.

When I get back I’ll also be in a new office, which is exciting, albeit a lot of change to happen at once, but I’m excited to be moving – Spring has sprung, change is in the air, and it’s all necessary and great.

I’ll leave you with 5gts:

1. Road trips with Paul Simon and best friends.

2. Training, although delayed, will be resumed next week when my cough is subsided, and I’ll be stronger than ever (I know it.)

3. New sneakers for my race.

4. New Brett Dennen.

5. Blue nail polish. Everyone should have blue nail polish at some point. Yesterday, Eddie, the check out man at TJ’s, sad, “Let me see your nails?” And proceeded to tell me that his daughter likes to paint her nails “crazy colors” too.

See you soon, chickadees. Love you each and every one.

i would never lie to you, no, i would never lie to you, no.

This weekend holds a lot of High Adventure in 2011 for us. Tomorrow is our annual Dockweiler Christmas Tree Burning trip, and then Sunday or Monday Jeff and I are going skiing. In the meantime, 5gts, and 5 song from the beach mix I made:

1. I have a new dress headed my way this week, thanks to Steep and Cheap.

* You’re So Vain, Carly Simon

2. It’s a three-day weekend, which means one extra day for excitement and/or rest and/or organization of my house.

* Bootylicious, Destiny’s Child

3. I am in the middle of three books right now, and I plan on spending some of my bonus-day finishing at least two of them. (Probably Tortilla Flat and The Birth of Venus.)

* Little Black Angels, Jonah Smith

4. I am finally not sick, which means my return to yoga is imminent. Sunday or Monday, I’m back in the saddle, ready to roll (or twist, or s t r e t c h)

* Goodnight L.A., Counting Crows

5. Tomorrow is my first day meeting my 4-5 Basketball team.

* Layla (Acoustic), Eric Clapton

5gts: Turkey Edition

1. Our turkey is 23 lbs.

2. Count is three days, two if you factor in that our cooking starts Wednesday.

3. There are at least four pies happening, and three PW recipes for Tday.

4. Corelyn and I are starting our day at 7:00 am. Here’s to mixed CDs and gabbing GALORE.

5. Did I mention the turkey is 23 lbs?

Watch for live blogging at Garlic, My Soul! In the meantime, send me what you’re thankful for, and I’ll post it on my blog on Thanksgiving as part of my up-and-coming “Readers Participation” weekly segment, starting in 2011.

5gts: Thursday before a LONG WEEK edition

I have six events at my job next week, so I am trying to cram all the goodness of two weeks into one. 5gts, you ask?

1. I swam 18 laps in 24:47 this morning. Faster than yesterday. I didn’t stop between any of the first ten laps. I think this resulted in slower swimming overall, but more endurance, and that’s what I am aiming for. There’s no bottom in a lake/ocean (in case I follow in my sister’s footsteps…) I rewarded myself with two laps of otter swimming (thanks Auntie Rose and Nikki for suggesting!)

2. Tonight is PW Challenge: Chicken-fried steak. Thank goodness I swam this morning! Also on the agenda is twice-baked potatoes and gossiping with CC, since I haven’t seen her in a hot second.

3. Glee was phenomenal this week. I watched it last night as part of date night (thanks Jeff!) and it really just blew my mind. It was way better than doing laundry 😉

4. Girl’s Night tomorrow night! And PW appetizers. What could be better?

5. The weather has finally cooled off, which sparked a cleaning frenzy in me when I realized I had drawers upon drawers full of unreasonable clothes. Pared down, got rid of a garbage bag full last night, and realized I have two pin-striped dress pants and a handful of patterned work-shirts. And six events in the next week or so. Problematic? Yes. We may have to go shopping on Saturday! On the gts side, I have an organized closet, summer clothes are away (for now) and drawers are looking fresh and clean!
