My sorella

My sister and I, we get along pretty well. There was a time we didn’t, back when I wanted everything that was hers, back when I cried about everything and said “It’s not fair” like 100 times a day, but I kind of grew out of it.

10 things we have in common:

  1. Our looks–we are exactly the same
  2. Our taste in food–both love mostly anything anyone puts in front of us, will always eat a turkey sandwich, Jax, and drink some diet soda.
  3. Our love of urban areas, she living in Chicago, and me living in Boston and now LA
  4. Our hatred of Comic Sans–it is the worst font in the world.
  5. Our love for reading, and similar taste in books
  6. Our love for James Taylor, which will never waiver
  7. Our love for laying by a pool or ocean and tanning, and equally our love for swimming
  8. Our love for soccer
  9. We have the exact same voice, and the tendency to be sarcastic
  10. Our desire to buy unreasonably expensive kitchen items because they are pretty and because we are the type of people who spend most of our time at home in the kitchen, no matter how small it is.

Basically,  I am a copier of my sister. And want to grow up to be just like her.

Guest Post: a love named C.

Assignment 53, from C, with love.

Ages 3-7
1.      Be nicer to your mother. Not living with her is the greatest
tragedy of her life. Try to soften the blow.

Age 11
1.      Lock the patio door at your hotel in the Bahamas. Trust me.

Age 14/15:
1.      Don’t worry so much. Moving is the right decision. Your mother is
sad, now, but this will actually make your relationship stronger.
2.      Hurting yourself isn’t the answer.
3.      Don’t let your mom talk you into using henna hair dye.

Age 16:
1.      Bring condoms to your cousin’s wedding.
2.      Do NOT go parking with P.
3.      Learn his last name and age, and try not to get so drunk you can’t
remember them later.
4.      When A calls you a heartbreaker and says you’re dangerous for him
to get involved with, no matter how full of shit you think he is,
believe him. He’s right.

Age 17:
1.      Make out with J in her car. She wants you to.
2.      Tell M that she may not share that bed with you and J. You would
like to be alone thankyouverymuch.
3.      Stop talking on the phone with S G. He’s not worth it.
4.      Enjoy every second you spend with B. This is what happiness feels
like. Recognize it and file for future use.
5.      Do not hook up with T and that college party. It’s gonna be awkward
the WHOLE time you’re at UVA.

Age 18:
1.      After sleeping with him, don’t assume he’s only interested in you
for sex. He’s not, but he’s going to think that’s all you want if you
don’t make it clear that you’re in love with him. Oh and by the way,
you’re in love with him. You’ll figure it out a little too late.
2.      Let B take you to the Prom. Fuck your friends. They’re bitches.
3.      Seriously, your two best friends are bitches. Spend more with with
people whose names begin with B.

Age 19:
1.     Don’t sleep with R when he’s that drunk.
2.      Stop hooking up with boys M likes. She will inexplicably forgive
you, but don’t do it anyway.
3.      Don’t do more than make out with Z. And maybe hang out with him a
little bit afterwards, just to be nice.
4.      Don’t go to Harrisonburg with K. Or at least don’t drink tequila
while you’re there.
5.      GO TO CLASS. STUDY. Even though you feel like shit, something is
going to happen to make you realize how stupid you’re being.
6.      Give B a hug on December 30th and tell her how much you love her
and everything her friendship has meant to you.

Assignment 53.

Check out this website. Some advice for  me:

To Jennie, age 14:

* Don’t listen to everything anyone tells you. Don’t believe too strongly in something just because your friends do.
* Listen to your mother. She’s right about them.
* Hang out with your sister more. She’s leaving to go to college, soon.

To Jennie, age 15:

* Don’t cry so much. Your life is pretty awesome.
* Tell your parents you love them more.
* Spend some more time with your girls.

To Jennie, age 16:

* Don’t stay with him for the summer just because your lockers are next to each other. You should really break up with him when you’re done with him. It’ll save heartache later.
* Don’t think you’re fat. Right now, you’re the skinniest you’re going to be. And even when you’re not as skinny, you’ll be happy. Because you’re beautiful.
* Focus when you go to NYC. You’ll remember every snowflake.

To Jennie, age 18:

* Break up before you go. Although you’ll miss some good times, you’ll thank me later.
* Don’t let him walk you home in September. It’ll be the start of heartbreak 4 years in the making.
* Don’t go to that party at K’s. Don’t let him be on the porch with you. Don’t let him tell you that he’d date you if only she didn’t exist. Don’t let him say he wishes she didn’t.
* It’s not your fault he died. Don’t let yourself believe it for a minute. Ever.
* Listen to your mother.

To Jennie, age 19:

* Don’t promise things you can’t to the people you love.
* Kiss him anyways. You won’t regret it.
* Kiss him, too. Ditto.
* Remember that your life is full of learning experiences. He loved you. Just not anymore.
* Listen to your mother.

Save the Earth.

save-the-earth

5 Ways to Save the Earth every day — from your desk!

1.Turn off your monitor when you leave your desk for more than a few seconds. It saves energy. Also, when you go home for the night, don’t forget to turn your speakers off if they are separate!

2. Use Blackle instead of Google.

3. If you drink a lot of water at your desk, bring a reusable water bottle instead of plastic ones. You may have to search out a bubbler, but Mother Earth will thank you for saving her from the plastic.

4. Use a travel mug to bring tea/coffee to the office, and leave a mug there for tea/coffee at work. I have a few of each, in case I leave a travel mug at work, and I try to use one for tea and one for coffee because coffee smell tends to hang out.

5. Use paperclips instead of staples. I have this paperclip holder on my desk! Or a stapleless stapler!

Bonus: Reuse the paper you use to printer out directions, lists, emails, etc. etc. If you use both side of each piece, think of all the paper that won’t be made into trees.

Children's books

fog1

I love the Internet. For a lot of reasons. But one of the most recent reasons is because I can search for books that I can hardly remember anything about and find them.

For example, I have been haunted for years by this book I read in fourth grade about this girl who travels back in time through fog. One quick google search leads me to the answer: Fog Magic.

Another book I often think of is a book about a brother and sister who are orphans who have to pick parsnips for their foster parents, and then stumble upon an alternate universal. Google tells me: The Owlstone Crown.

10 other books I recently rediscovered from my childhood include:

1. Jacob Have I Loved
2. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
3. The Egypt Game
4. The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm
5. The BFG
6. A Wrinkle in Time
7. Heckedy Peg
8. Walk Two Moons
9. Tangerine
10. My Name is Brain
