It’s just funny…what do you need a headlamp for?

For a while now, I’ve owned a headlamp. I keep it in my bedside table. It’s there in case there is an earthquake in the middle of the night, in case the power goes out, in case I need to go to the garage in the dark, or in case I need to pack it for camping.

Last July 4th, we were at the beach and I had my headlamp in my bag. It was getting dark as we packed up, so I said, “Hold on,” and found it, strapped it on, and kept cleaning up. My friend E just laughed, and said, “You just have a headlamp? What do you need a headlamp for?” I declared I used it for camping, for the garage, and for moments just like these.

It was my only source of light when I chaperoned a trip to Ranch Camp. I used it when I road-tripped with Lauren down the California coast. Corelyn and I used the headlamp to paint the chairs for our photo shoot in the garage, in the dark. I brought it on my road trip with Corelyn, and managed to pull it out the last night to direct her out of the driveway with her full car. I cursed myself the day we went to the winery tour and we didn’t have one to look in the huge containers they store the wine in. I used it just the other day to look at Jeff’s finger (which is another story) in our dim living room.

I think everyone should own a headlamp. And you know what? Real Simple magazine, a magazine I adore and trust, agrees with me! In June’s Real Simple, which arrived at my door on Monday, there is mention of having a headlamp on hand (for grilling, mainly, or for whatever!) I laughed when I saw this, about two years after my own falling in love with my headlamp. Jeff got mine for me, and I suggest you ask your boyfriend/girlfriend/best friend for one for your next birthday, too!

I still love not camping (unless it's with my BFF, L.)

This past weekend, Lauren, my BFF, and I did a road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles, by way of Route 1 and the 101. It was a long long journey, very fun, and VERY tiring. Some highlights, you ask?

1. I forged a river with our car, in the dark. It was terrifying.

Do you see where it says “Bridge”? There was no bridge. There was raging river.

2. We headed to a beach filled with seals, and spent a peaceful half-hour just being with them.

3. We ate at a restaurant that had a spirit stage and human nests. And lavender creme brulee. Fantastic.

4. When camping, we wore headlamps, extra clothes, and some how magically had our fire rekindle in the middle of the night.

5. We got chocolate covered strawberries from this nice man.

6. I used an outdoor sink, with running water. I found this magical.

7.  We went to an antique store in Half Moon Bay, called Half to Have It.

8. We hiked a little.

9. We took pictures of people taking pictures.

10. We drove 930 miles, all together. Stops in: Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and home. Not including all the various stops made in between for coffee and the like.

It was a great trip. But I was glad to get home Sunday night to a bed, and a whole week with Lauren, still to go! What an excellent week. Overall, I think we both decided we like NOT camping — when it comes to 45 degree weather, rocky grounds, and lack of fire-building skills (although we did get it lit, eventually.)

How are you all?

Off I go to Yosemite

Hi all! I have my bags packed, and I am ready to leave for Yosemite! I am bringing more than I brought for my ten day adventure to NYC and MI, but I am going by myself, and I have to bring food, so I think that the amount of stuff that I am bringing is reasonable. Jeff doesn’t, and he’s probably right, but I myself say overpack!

I will be back on August 24, so expect some pictures that week. Look for them.

See you on the flip side, friends!
