This year the Joshua Tree’s are blooming, something rarely done in such large numbers. Last week, Jeff and I drove to Joshua Tree National Park to see them in bloom; although the bloom may represent the plants distress at being without rain this year, a sort of last-ditch effort to procreate, it was beautiful, and a reminder of the fragile ecosystem of the desert and this planet.
Thanks to Jeff for the majority of these beautiful photographs. Happy Earth Day, everyone. (PS – here are some more!)
Mom and Dad came to visit. We toured LA as tourists and as seasoned vets of the city; we wine tasted, hiked, saw the Hollywood sign, sat by the pool, drank jalapeno cocktails, went to the ocean, walked the Santa Monica Pier, smiled in front of the Rose Bowl, played soccer, and laughed, laughed, laughed. My parents are the coolest.
Thanks to Jeff for snapping so many great photos! There are more here. I can’t wait for them to come back! Thanks Mom and Dad, for such a lovely trip!
Today we ran the LA Color Run 5k. The general idea is an untimed race where you run 5 (ish) kilometers, and at each kilometer, someone throws corn-starchy color at you. Simple, right? Fun? Definitely. It was Debby’s first 5K, which was exciting, and we had a big team (Color Us Bad.)
Here’s the crew, pre-race.
After a handful of photos, we lined up and got ready to run!
At the finish, we found each other again and opened up our color packets we were given at the start.
Then we were REALLY covered in color.
All in all, despite the fact that this race wasn’t quite a 5k (and also wasn’t timed), we had a great time! Sometimes when racing, it’s fun to remember that exercise doesn’t have to be awful, it can be a super-fun crazy morning of throwing colored corn starch at your beloved friends! And, the race was mostly uphill, so that must count for something, right?
Did anyone else do the color run? Is anyone in LA running a race soon?
Well friends, I ran my first 10k last Saturday. I was nervous because I had been sick for a few weeks prior, and hadn’t had a chance to run between my 5k on Thanksgiving and my 10k on December 8th, but I just figured I’d do the best I could do, and that was that.
I ended up finishing in 1:22, about a 13:22 pace. Slower than I would have liked, but still, as I crossed the 5k mark, I knew that I was running further than I ever had. And no matter what, every pace past that was a personal best.
Here we are at the finish – how cute are we, despite our tiredness?
We met up with Jen and Aaron, who were about to run the 5k, and color coordinated even though we didn’t realize it!
Ellen’s dad came out and was there close to the finish line, cheering on the runners, and giving me a high-5 when I past, despite the fact that Ellen had finished 17 minutes earlier…his smile and encouragement DEFINITELY got me going for the last .2 miles, indeed! Not to mention running into Jen, Aaron, and Jeff, who jumped in and finished the race with me!
Here we are looking for Ellen’s name, and my name, but more importantly, look at our cute hair ribbon that Ellen made for us!
Overall, I am glad I finished, that I didn’t finish horribly, and that I had such a great support group there to watch us run! I can’t wait to run another race and to work towards another goal, and luckily we have one coming up in February.
Hope you’re getting some goals ready for 2013, friends!
