5. My husband, which, though cheesy, is really the number 1 on this list. Keeping me sane over weeks and weeks of busy lives with a cool, even attitude and knowing what I need at every turn.

Jeff has been working crazy hours, and I have been sick, so this Sunday, which is the first day in a week I am really feeling like myself, I am enjoying a relaxing day doing exactly the following things:

writing thank you cards // working on wedding stuff // crossing things off my list // catching up on GMS stuff long neglected // photographing some delicious foods made by E // video chatting with my family because my dad is the best // eating pizza for breakfast // drinking coffee for the first time since Tuesday // listening, twice, to Matt Nathanson Live at the Point because, damn. // heading to yoga to flow it out // reading the book club book // cracking open the latest NatGeo with gusto // making playlists, because it’s been too long // braiding my hair, always // contemplating why baby mockingbirds have made their home in the tree outside our window // researching the nesting period of mockingbirds // don’t worry it’s only 12-14 days // good news, they don’t reuse their nests // writing for GMS because, funfetti. // missing my boo but knowing i’ll see him this week // living.

i want to be fearless in my creative self

Tonight I was supposed to start my 5k training leading to a 10K training leading to a 7 mile race in March. It was supposed to be a rest day, but then my week plans weren’t going to work with my training, so I made my first running day Monday.

I wasn’t feeling well today, and when the time came to run I just didn’t want to. But one of my coworkers also was having a bad day, and I told her to go to the gym, and that I would go running, and then it’d be Tuesday. So I had a snack. And then I changed, and I went for a run.

I like to listen to music as much as anyone else, but I find when I am running I like to listen to something that can last the whole run, like a podcast. I was fresh out of the Katniss Chronicles, and I somehow didn’t have a RadioLab fully downloaded (I know, that’s shocking) so I decided that I was going to listen to the rest of the Matt Nathanson Patcast.

It’s episode one of Pat Monahan’s show (of the band Train) and it’s basically Matt and Pat just chatting about their lives and careers, and it’s mind blowing because I love them both, and I didn’t know that they were friends, and they sing together on the podcast, and it’s marvelous.

At one point, Matt is talking about the creative process, and he is talking about how when he writes he just wants to be able to do whatever he wants, without judgement or criticism, because that hinders the process. And he says, eloquently, between MANY quotes including the beloved eff word (I kind of like that he swears as much as I seem to), “I want to be fearless in my creative self.”

That really resonated with me, while I was out there running, so much so that I listened to that section of the podcast twice. I feel that when I am cooking the kitchen. I feel that when I am writing for this blog, just for myself. I feel that running, when I want to run for fitness, not to get faster, or get better.

Because the getting better part, it comes. Whether you’re consciously pushing for it, or not, you become a better chef if you continue to persevere in the kitchen. You get better at communication if you write it down. You become a faster runner, and you build your endurance, if you run several times a week. If you think fearlessly, you can push past boundaries that society, or friends, or family, or even you, put on you.

You don’t need to constantly wonder if what you’re doing is getting better, or is better than someone else, or is different. You just have to be true to yourself. You have to be fearless. If you’re fearless, there’s no failure, because you’re being you, and your creativity is worth something, whether it’s on a guitar, in the kitchen, or on the page.

So here’s to running to run. And cooking to cook. And writing a maybe shitty song because you feel the harmony in your heart and you just need to get it out, lyrics be damned. Or maybe, writing your next hit, writing the recipe that’ll inspire a cookbook, or finally, finally running the fastest mile of your life.

It’s concert season, around these parts. Last week, I went with C and T to see Hanson, where I was not disappointed by great tunes, lots of old songs to groove too, and an usually comfortable venue AND crowd. This was one of the best Hanson shows I’ve been to (and I’ve been to six or seven.)

Then this past week, I got to see Matt Nathanson, who is always a delight in concert, moving his hips and making us clap, asking us to judge people around us who aren’t singing along.

Matt posits that there is a tiny Whitney Houston in everyone, and tiny Whitney needs to DANCE, so we sang “Dance with Somebody” and generally bopped around the floor of the Wiltern, singing as loud as we could and waving our heads around. This was hands down the best time I’ve seen Matt (this was the fourth time) because he has so many new fun songs, and “Modern Love” as an album really just screams “I AM A BLAST SING ME.”

I love concert season, because it means I get to get dressed up, go to a venue, sing and dance around and feel like I’m sixteen again at the Verve Pipe concert my Dad shuttled us to in Detroit circa 2002.

Up next, I’m hoping to see 3eb in December, and we’re going to Radio Lab Live in November, which while not a concert is still a live event that I can’t wait to be a part of.

Happy on-the-other-side of Monday, everyone! Things are looking up, up, up over here.

After a weekend that has sobering news from several fronts in the world, it is humbling to rediscover things to keep us grounded. Here, we’re having a wonderful day because there are new albums out, new websites and yoga routines to explore, and a new wilderness to explore on the other side of this work day.

I have checked out two new yoga routines this past week, and I am happy to report they’re opening me up and keeping me active (and present!) on the mat, which is welcome after a lull of love for yoga (gasp!) I discovered it was a combination of boredom (after all, I only have three DVD routines I’ve been cycling through) and the heat, so I have been heading to the studio once a week, finishing off a Groupon and making it last over the weeks by reinvigorating my practice once a week in-studio and the rest of the time committing to “hot” yoga in my non-air conditioned house!

Meanwhile, on the music front, you guys, Matt Nathanson’s new album! Every single one of his albums make me SO smiley, all for different reasons. I was in a music rut again, and I am happy that there are two new albums out to add to my “new” music, along with Hanson’s “Anthem.” Sara Bareilles knows how to speak to the heart, and for her and her talent, I am so grateful. Also up is a new single from Brett Dennen, with an album release in October. Rejoice!
